Dear Ones,
Can you hear me? Can you hear me calling?
I have no Shofar dear ones, nor a community to gather around me anymore.
I am the Aegina Synagogue.
But in Athens, Ioanninna, Chalkida, Corfu, and Chania the Shofar sounded yet again.
Romaniotes, Greek speaking Jews,
descendents of my Aegina community.
You are my continuation. We are relatives of sort.
And as family, I turn to you, to support me now, in my time of need.
I need You.
Please speak and stand by me;
guard and preserve me.
Beloveds,
This Day of Atonement 2023, Yom Kippur 5784, I ask you to pause,
to think and ponder,
reflect and consider this:
The earth belongs to all of us! To me as much as to you.
Dear Ones,
Back at the time of my construction, Theodoros Archisynagogos took good care of me.
My mosaic attests to that.
But his legacy dear ones,
his stewardship,
no Shofar can impose.
Cherish me dear ones,
love and protect me,
as I am,
in my
withering old age.
This Day of Atonement 2023,
please heed my call dear ones,
if not now, then when?
From Jerusalem with love,
The Synagogue of Aegina through Yvette Nahmia-Messinas as well as the friends and the community worldwide, many of whom wish to remain anonymous, who have so far supported the project.
